The cluster of scientific works of engineer Hoang Duc Thao became the only one of the business sector achieved the 5^th Ho Chi Minh Prize.

With practical applications, the cluster of scientific works "Construction of a comprehensive system of urban and rural infrastructure, environmental protection, natural disaster prevention and adaptation to the climate change” of engineer Hoang Duc Thao, cum Chairman and General Director of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Urban Sewerage and Development Company (BUSADCO) is a unique cluster of works in the business sector achieved the 5^th Ho Chi Minh Prize.

The cluster of works are assessed by many experts as the outstanding in the formation, establishment of new research direction, confirming the importance of scientific research and technological innovation in the enterprise.

Research passionate Businessman

To visit Tham Luong canal in Ho Chi Minh City in the hot summer day, you will see no sight of sleazy, dirty on the shore or feel the stench of the black water stream; conversely is a new space for inhabitants here. This is the result after a new embankment section was built in the pilot program applying BUSADCO’s technology: assembled reinforced concrete components for protection of riverbanks, lakes and dykes

The author of the assembled component technology is engineer Hoang Duc Thao, Labor Hero in renovation period. Many successful products of cluster of scientific works "Construction synchronized construction of technical infrastructure for urban and rural areas, environmental protection, disaster prevention and adaptation to climate change" has brought the businessman Hoang Duc Thao having many strange nicknames: Dr. "barefoot"; King of sewer; environment Dr., "embankment" Thao or valiant killing odors.

Being as a worker at the starting point, not a professional scientist, Labor Hero Hoang Duc Thao had to at once learning and research; but "property" of his works until now is extremely giant: He is the author of 19 scientific works, innovative new technologies with 19 technological products, bringing great turnover to his company.

He said: "Since leading BUSADCO, every day I witnessed the drainage workers getting into the sewer, dredge manually the blockages ditches. The work was extremely hard and hazardous. From this fact and I was already familiar with some dredging machines, conveying the sludge from low levels to higher levels, I began to cherish the dream of manufacturing the sludge dredging machine"

From that dream, the first successful invention of engineer Hoang Duc Thao was sewer cleaning winch machine for urban areas, with the desire of actively control the urban underground sewers as well as fast drainage, flood control and ensure the health for the workers, they would not directly expose to contaminated sediments inside the sewers.
After the initial success, BUSADCO had produced a series of sewer cleaning winch machines to supply to the market. The product brought the productivity of more than 20 times compared to the manual method, the employees have been released from the wastewater stream pollution.

The successful applications
So far, under the leadership of Labor Hero Hoang Duc Thao, BUSADCO has studied, applied many scientific and technological works to the fields of urban technical infrastructure construction, environmental protection, adaptation to climate change. Especially, BUSADCO has successfully manufactured the Precast reinforced concrete with thin wall products.

"I have been very brave to implement this project because the technology of reinforced concrete have had been a hundred historical years in the world, if it is not successful, I will pay dearly, both losing money and condemning by public opinion. Therefore, when deciding on improvements to research the reinforced concrete with thin walls, I had to mobilize my colleagues to get involved with, finally the project was successful beyond expectations. "

This unique product has been widely applied in many cities and provinces and highly evaluated for its efficiency.

Mr. Pham Van Ka, Vice Chairman of Thai Binh province, said: "When applying BUSADCO’s technology of Precast reinforced concrete with thin walls, I think it is very suitable because it is high-quality, beautiful form, easy for transport, consistent with economic conditions in our country. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recognized this is a technical progress and also directed widely applied in the cities and provinces".

Beside the precast reinforced concrete with thin wall products, a product group of the cluster of works is also known as embankments for protection of riverbanks, lakes and dykes. The works comes from the influence of climate change making a lot of riverside, seashore seriously eroded.
Currently, the works have been successfully constructed with nearly 4 km of coastline in Tien Hai (Thai Binh). Thus, after two big storms last July 2016, this dyke is still standing.

According to Mr. Thao, after only 4 months constructing the seadike embankment, the works has been completed. He has been surveying the practice of many works, Mr. Thảo together with BUSADCO engineers have spent all days and nights to study for seeking solution to overcome the limitations of traditional methods, resulting to the technology solution of assembled reinforced concrete components for protection of riverbanks, lakes and dykes was launched.

Using fiber reinforced concrete and poplystylen instead of reinforced concrete to increase the resistance to seawater eroded. Associating with the mainly assemply construction process significantly reduce the workload and working time, take advantage of local materials.

Thanks to the scientific studies of Labor Hero Hoang Duc Thao, BUSADCO’s works always has been outstanding and bearing high applicability. Especially, it has responded to the trend of environmental protection, climate adaptation of each region, in the direction of sustainable development. The products is associated with environmental protection is the goal and spirit of this businessman during the past time.
